Co-Regulation: A Path to Recovery
Co-regulation is the process where two or more individuals attune their nervous systems to one another, creating a sense of safety and calm. Unlike self-regulation, where we rely solely on our own techniques to manage our sensations, feelings and inner world, co-regulation involves the supportive presence of another, helping us find balance together.
Self-regulation is a crucial skill that humans develop from a young age, allowing us to manage our behaviors independently as children. Humans draw strength from social connections to enhance our resilience; in fact, connection is necessary for our survival.
In our journey to heal from chronic illness, the power of human connection often becomes a profound resource. Co-regulation can reduce stress, lower inflammation, and create an environment where healing thrives.
Co-Regulation Practices
You can see if one of these practices feels possible for you:
- Connect with a Loved One: Spend time with someone who makes you feel safe and understood. Hearing their voice in a phone call or a video chat, or in person can help regulate your nervous system.
- Buy a Teddy Bear: Many people with chronic conditions are alone, either for all or part of the day. I encourage you to gift yourself a soft cuddly toy. It is surprisingly soothing and helpful.
- Seek Support: Spending time with someone who understands what you are going through, like a friend or a coach, can provide empathy and compassion. You will co-regulate as you begin to feel safe.
Tip: Notice if you begin to yawn when with your co-regulation buddy. Yawning is a wonderful indicator that you are co-regulating.
Healing through co-regulation is a practice of both courage and connection. With every small step toward attuning to others and receiving their support, you are creating an environment for profound healing and resilience.
